‘The Heaven of Me’: Identity Construction & Creative Expression in Bhutanese Art

During the construction of his home monastery of Tamzhing Lhündrup Chöling, Nyingma tertön and Bhutan native Pema Lingpa (1450-1521) urged his artists to create images of specific deities in their heavens, including, he said, the “heaven of me.” What might have driven his choices, and how can an informed viewer understand the space that resulted? By drawing on textual evidence and extant imagery, this talk explores the relationships between image, text and ritual, and highlights the role that iconography plays in creating identities and maintaining sacred space.
