General UVa Fellowship Opportunities

The University of Virginia offers undergraduate students multiple opportunities to apply for fellowship and academic scholarship opportunities to support study at UVa, research projects, and/or travel in Asia. For further graduate level funding opportunities, please see individual department websites.

• Ellen Bayard Weedon Travel Grants for Language Study
  This grant is awarded by UVa’s East Asia Center. Funds granted are to be used towards the cost of round-trip airfare between Charlottesville and East Asia. Travel within an Asian country will not be covered by the grant.
• Mastercard Asian Studies Scholarship
  Established by Ms. Rebecca George and H. Eugene Lockhart Jr. to encourage the study of Asia, the Mastercard Asian Studies Scholarship is an annual scholarship is awarded each year to a student who shows excellence in language study and creative approaches to topics in South Asian or East Asian studies or languages. • Raven Fellowship for Undergraduate and Graduate Research Projects
  The Raven Society awards research fellowships of up to $2500 in support of summer or fall undergraduate or graduate independent research projects. Recognizing the importance of student projects of a global nature, the Raven Society gives special consideration to projects that incorporate interdisciplinary elements.
• UVa Alumni Association
  The UVa Alumni Association maintains multiple fellowships, ranging in amount, which vary depending on the student’s course of study and year-level.
• Margaret M. Coughlin Memorial Award in Asian History
  This scholarship, which provides a cash award of $2,500 and up to $1,300 in Airfare to Asia, is open to all graduating fourth-year students, any major, with 12 credit hours in South or East Asia-related courses, including at least 6 credit hours in Asian history. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of academic excellence and a commitment to pursue Asia-related interests in graduate school, professional school, or in a career.
• Luce Scholarship Program
  This nation-wide program provides stipends and internships for eighteen young Americans to live and work in Asia each year. Dating from 1974, the program’s purpose is to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society.
